Leanne Shapton is our Type Reader for February

Leanne Shapton is a New York-based illustrator, author, publisher, and Type Books darling. Everywhere you turn, you will come across one of her works - The Native Trees of Canada,  Swimming Studies,  Sunday Night Movies,  Women in Clothes,  a rabbit laden tote bag , countless cover designs and magazine spreads. Leanne's inspired touch radiates through our Queen Street store.

We are so excited to be celebrating the Drawn & Quarterly launch of her book Was She Pretty?  
on Saturday, February 6th at 7:30pm. Leanne will be appearing in conversation with author Sheila Heti.


What is the first book you remember loving?
The Sugar Mouse Cake  by Gene Zion, illustrated by Margaret Bloy Graham

What is your favorite virtue in a book?
A beautiful ache.

What do you appreciate most in a book character?
Cleverness and contradiction.

If you were to write a non-fiction book about anything, what would it be about?

Has a design or art book ever had an impact on your life, and if so, what was the impact?
Cox Codex  by Paul Cox-- I saw how formal exercises and experiments could be the solution to problems, and a through a monograph of Henri Fantin Latour I understood that what seems bourgeois and straightforward can be so tender and dark.

What book have you never read but have always meant to? Do you think you will ever read it?
