Michelle from North 49 is our September Type Reader

The ever-charming Michelle works for a book wholesaler in Toronto, so she's always in the know as to what's new, what's hot, and what's about to be hot in the book world. She is also a lover and frequenter of indie bookstores and has a passion for books that rivals her passion for baking delicious, mouth-watering treats. It's this knowledge of and enthusiasm for the written word that make her the perfect choice for this month's Type Reader.

What is the first book you remember loving?
There were two: Charlotte’s Web and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

What do you appreciate most in a book character?
Common sense and decency.

If you were to write a non-fiction book about anything, what would it be about?
Bowls. I really love bowls. Not just their function but what I feel they represent. Home, sustenance.

Do you read on public transportation?
Yes, whenever I get the chance. How glorious is it to almost or in fact miss your stop because you are so engrossed in a great book. I used to have a lengthy commute and it was most enjoyable.

What qualities do you want in a book you’re read while traveling?
For long train rides or flights, I like light and fluffy or something funny. Anthologies and short stories are good for commuting.

What book have you never read but have always meant to? Do you think you will ever read it?
Book of Negroes  by Lawrence Hill. I keep saying I’ll read it and even recorded the mini-series but nope, can’t do it. Everyone says it’s a great book and I believe them but for some reason, it’s not happening… That and The Alchemist, why are people so obsessed with telling people they must read it?

What book do you pretend to have read, but in fact have not?
No point in pretending, there are A LOT of books I have read. I should pretend to have read something just so I have something to say at a dinner party to appear with it or intelligent? Meh.

What books are you reading right now?
Fates and Furies  by Lauren Groff, several cookbooks, Days of Rage  by Bryan Burrough getting caught up with my New Yorkers.
